The ATLAS project – IV: the molecular gas content of early-type galaxies

چکیده
We have carried out a survey for CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 emission in the 260 early-type galaxies of the volume-limited ATLAS sample, with the goal of connecting their star formation and assembly histories to their cold gas content. This is the largest volume-limited CO survey of its kind and is the first to include many Virgo Cluster members. Sample members are dynamically hot galaxies with a median stellar mass ∼ 3 × 10 M⊙; they are selected by morphology rather than colour, and the bulk of them lie on the red sequence. The overall CO detection rate is 56/259 = 0.22 ±0.03, with no dependence on K luminosity and only a modest dependence on dynamical mass. There are a dozen CO detections among the Virgo Cluster members; statistical analysis of their H2 mass distributions and their dynamical status within the cluster shows that the cluster’s influence on their molecular masses is subtle at best, even though (unlike spirals) they seem to be virialized within the cluster. We suggest that the cluster members have retained their molecular gas through several Gyr residences in the cluster. There are also a few extremely CO-rich early-type galaxies with H2 masses & 10 M⊙, and these are in low density environments. We do find a significant trend between molecular content and the stellar specific angular momentum. The galaxies of low angular momentum also have low CO detection rates, suggesting that their formation processes were more effective at destroying molecular gas or preventing its re-accretion. We speculate on the implications of these data for the formation of various sub-classes of early-type galaxies.

Molecular Gas and Star Formation in Local Early-Type Galaxies
The molecular gas content of local early-type galaxies is constrained and discussed in relation to their evolution. First, as part of the ATLAS survey, we present the first complete, large (260 objects), volume-limited single-dish survey of CO in normal local early-type galaxies. We find a surprisingly high detection rate of 22%, independent of luminosity and at best weakly dependent on environ...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

We present the results of the Virgo high-resolution CO survey (ViCS) obtained with the Nobeyama Millimeter-wave Array (NMA). This survey was made in the course of a long-term project at Nobeyama from 1999 December through 2002 April. The objects were selected from Virgo cluster members, considering CO richness from single dish flux, mild inclination, and lack of strong tidal perturbations. The ...
متن کاملEvidence of boosted CO/CO ratio in early-type galaxies in dense environments
We present observations of CO(1–0) in 17 Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) ATLAS early-type galaxies (ETGs), obtained simultaneously with CO(1–0) observations. The CO in six ETGs is sufficiently bright to create images. In these 6 sources, we do not detect any significant radial gradient in the CO/CO ratio between the nucleus and the outlying molecular gas. Using the C...

Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems rich in molecular gas. We study here the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as deduced from the infrared luminosity LIR in LIGs. We find a correlation between the CO(1-0) luminosity (a measure of molecular mass M(H2)) and the projected...
